Imagine looking back on one day 30 years ago… seeing where you lived, what you wore, what you spent your time doing…

For me, photography is storytelling. I want to be able to look back on our family pictures with our daughter and for her to see what our life was like, and what she was like as a child. So that doesn’t mean saying cheese or doing pretty poses…

I sometimes give talks to parents about how to take better pictures of their children. I don’t focus on camera settings and equipment but instead on working with your children, making it fun and how to capture the ‘real’ them….

I recommend keeping a pocket camera in your bag and I never go anywhere without mine, it means that if something special is happening then you can grab it quickly. But I also recommending setting aside a day, whether it be a day out or a regular day at home, and recording the different events – big and small. Capturing the scene, the details, the story…

Here’s a day I did with my daughter a few weeks ago… I shared it at a recent talk I gave and promised to blog it… Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-001Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-002Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-003Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-004Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-005Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-007Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-008Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-009Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-010Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-011Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-012Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-013Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-014Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-040Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-016Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-017Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-018Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-015Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-034Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-035Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-019Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-020Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-021Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-022Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-023Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-024Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-025Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-026Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-027Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-028Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-029Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-030Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-031Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-032Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-033Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-038Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-039Day in the life - Clare Breheny Photography-041

  • Victoria - What beautiful natural images and a perfect record of your daughter growing up. I take iphone snaps every day and cherish them just as dearly as the studio portraits of my little ones, it’s so important to record these moments!

  • Jalen - Arlectis like this make life so much simpler.

  • http://w3conf.net/mercadolibre.com.ar - Seeing you think about Sandman makes me smile like an idiot, but honestly I think it would be cool to see another Neil Gaiman piece made into a game: American Gods. Mostly because car blow jobs (uh, SPOILER ALERT?).

  • hausratversicherung umzug kündigung - I found you through the Nester and I absolutely love your topic. As a mom of almost 4, I need to learn to rest! 🙂 I am writing about "all things children"- we'll see if I can make it through all 31 days. 🙂

Following my post on Mother’s day last year, I have made a pledge to do a self-portraiture shoot with my little one every year for Mother’s day. It’s a stake in the ground, a commitment I have to keep, as otherwise my daughter will have all these pictures and wonder why I never wanted to be in the picture with her. She’ll see the wonderful relationships and dynamics she has with other friends and family, but never me, because I always had that big black box in front of my face!!

So here is our Mother’s day shoot from 2014. Thanks again to Alexandra from GLO Cosmetics for helping pretty me up! Always a treat!
