My 2016 highlights

2016 ended on a real high for me as we welcomed our son into the world. The last seven weeks since he arrived have whizzed past – ten unexpected days in NICU for my son, my birthday, Christmas, New Year – and so as we go into 2017 I look forward to our family getting into it’s new rhythm and kicking off some new projects.

Welcome to the world

I have the common guilt of a second time parent and photographer, feeling I haven’t got the ‘big camera’ out as often as I should, but here is a small selection of some favourite images of my son…as with newborn clients I have captured two sets of images – some ‘dark and moody’ and some ‘light and fresh’.

Holiday photo shoots

In 2016 we had some lovely family holidays which provided me with the opportunity to capture some images of my daughter to add to her photographic record. Just having a bit more time on holiday to get the big camera out and edit the images makes a huge difference… she is growing up so quickly and I treasure the images I have taken of her…we spend hours and hours looking through her photographs and videos – especially now she has a baby brother and is wanting to know what she was like at his age…

The perfect baby age – sitting babies

In terms of my client work, 2016 seemed to be the year for sitting babies. I have always loved this age. Babies have still got their “baby podge” but are getting their sense of humour and own personal expressions and reactions. As a mother, it’s the age I really have the most wonderful memories of with my daughter and I remember just wanting to freeze time. I love working in my new home studio for these shoots as it is just the right space and I’ve settled on a very simple, neutral style that really shows off the joy of this age…

It was a great compliment when my studio sitting-baby images impressed MORI,  a baby clothing company and they approached me to shoot their commercial look book. Their brand and my style worked really well together – organic, simple, modern… We did two shoots in 2016 and here are the highlights from the first shoot…

Older children in the studio

In 2016 I dedicated some time to developing a style of portraits suitable for older children. In the past I have always preferred to shoot outdoors once children are on their feet but quite a few parents had asked me for studio portraits of their children, and a number of them were particularly keen to capture images before baby teeth start falling out (around 4-6 yrs), so I created my Black and White Expressions Sessions. These are designed to be short, fun sessions and produce classic, timeless portraits but with lots of personality – whether that be cheeky or shy, energetic or contemplative… I fell in love with these sessions and can’t wait to do more.

Lavender Fields

I also enjoyed going back to the lavender fields for family and siblings shoots. There is something about the colours and continuous rows of lavender that children can get lost in, that make the images very special. The focus on nature is a great setting for timeless pictures of children and I particularly enjoyed getting siblings to interact as I know these are the images that parents often struggle to get themselves.

I look forward to offering Lavender shoots to more clients in 2017 – please sign up to my quarterly newsletter if you would like to be the first to hear about the dates for these sessions.

Looking ahead

2017 looks to be a packed year. I have recently gone through a rebranding process for both my family and boudoir photography and can’t wait to launch these brands via totally new websites (with awesome mobile functionality!). It’s exciting to have a fresh look (it’s nearly seven years since the current brand was created!) that reflects my personal style and ethos and I can’t wait to share it with you.

I have a few more months of maternity leave and I am looking forward to making the most of warm, baby snuggles and settling my daughter into school (she starts next week – eek!!). I hope to also use this time for getting my fitness back and finding fresh inspiration through gallery visits, preparing me to come back to my clients with fresh ideas and tonnes of energy later in the year. In the meantime, I will continue to share lots of my images via instagram (it’s my social media platform of choice!) So please do come and follow my work there.

Thank you for all your kind messages and interactions during 2016. I wish you all well for 2017, my focus is to enjoy the journey – I hope you do too!
